Bill Ahmuty was the founder and first captain of the men’s rowing team at Holy Cross.
He almost single-handedly conceived, planned and executed the formation of the first Crusader crew.
Prior to the team’s first season in 1964-1965, Ahmuty recruited the oarsmen, procured equipment, arranged the use of boathouses, scheduled competitions, coordinated travel and convinced John Anscomb, a young classics instructor who had rowed at Oxford, to be the coach.
In addition to all that he did to found the program, Ahmuty rowed in the seventh seat during the crew’s inaugural season, helping Holy Cross win the Brother O’Hare Cup at the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship in New York.
