Hall of Fame
Earle Markey was a star player on the Holy Cross basketball team in the early 1950s.
A three-time All-New England and All-District selection, he earned honorable mention All-America honors and was named to the NCAA All-East Regional team as a senior. Markey was also selected to play in the 1953 East-West College All-Star game at Madison Square Garden.
Just the third player in program history to score over 1,000 career points, Markey led the team to an overall record of 64-15 in his collegiate career.
During his sophomore year, he helped the Crusaders to an overall mark of 20-5. Holy Cross then had a record of 24-4 during Markey’s junior season and made it to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.
As a senior captain in 1952-1953, he led the team to a 20-6 record and victories over Navy and Wake Forest in the NCAA Tournament, before the team fell to Louisiana State in the Elite Eight.
Following his graduation, Markey was drafted by the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association, but turned down the offer to become a Jesuit priest.
In his years as a Jesuit, he spent time as principal at St. Peter’s Prep in New Jersey and in a number of roles at Holy Cross, including vice president of student affairs and associate director of Jesuit relations in the office of admissions.
