Ray Ball never got a lot of publicity because he was a blocking back in the old single-wing formation, yet he was a great all around player and the last of the two-way quarterbacks. When he was not on offense, he starred at linebacker on defense.

Ball was the starting quarterback in 1942 and a key man in Holy Cross' startling 55-12 victory over Boston College, considered by many to be the greatest college football upset of all time.

He left Holy Cross in 1942 for a stint in the service, but came back to quarterback the 1946 and 1947 teams.  Ball was a three-year All New England selection, played 60 minutes in every game and played in three wins over Boston College.
