Malo Maloney was a standout player on the Holy Cross baseball and football teams in the late 1910s.
As a first baseman on the baseball diamond, Maloney hit .282 as a sophomore while helping the team to an overall record of 22-4 and the Eastern Championship.
In 1918, he played until he enlisted in the Navy in World War I. He was assigned to Newport, R.I., and played on the famous Second Naval District team comprised of all big-leaguers except three collegians: Maloney, Syracuse’s Chick Meehan and Brown’s Rube Richards.
Maloney returned to Holy Cross for his senior year in 1919 and led the team to a 22-1 record and another Eastern Championship. Following the season, he earned a spot on the All-Eastern first team.
On the gridiron, he made the varsity squad as a sophomore at halfback, before switching over to center and defensive fullback the next season.
After graduation, Maloney operated an athletic supply business for over 40 years. He passed away in 1986.
