Tom Stankard was the first Holy Cross football player to receive All-America honors and also was a brilliant shortstop.
Although he weighed only 175 pounds on his six-foot frame, Stankard was chosen by Walter Camp on the All-America third team in 1903, when he played a major role in helping Holy Cross to an 8-2 record and a No. 4 ranking in the East. The captain of the 1903 team, he played fullback on offense and end on defense.
He also earned three letters in baseball as a shortstop and led the team in batting in both 1903 and 1904. Stankard signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates following his graduation.
