Only 5’2”, Walter “Doc” Gautreau was also an outstanding baseball player at Holy Cross.

Prior to his graduation in 1925, he played every inning in 101 straight games for the Crusaders at second base and was instrumental in the team’s 92-8-1 record.

He was one of the top hitters in the East throughout his career and later went on a major league career with the Philadelphia Athletics and the Boston Braves.

Following his baseball career, the diminutive infielder was a minor league manager and major league scout for the Boston Braves and California Angels. He passed away in 1970.
