Jim Stewart was a standout member of the Holy Cross men’s ice hockey team in the mid to late 1970s.
A four-year starter in goal and team captain as a senior, Stewart was named a first team Titan All-American in 1977-1978, in addition to being a first team All-East and All-New England selection. He helped Holy Cross to its first trip to the ECAC playoffs that year, while finishing the season with a school-record .914 save percentage.
He finished his career with 3,173 minutes played, 1,823 saves and an .893 save percentage.
After graduation, Stewart signed an NHL contract with the Boston Bruins and played in their minor league system. On January 10, 1980 Jim made his NHL debut against the St. Louis Blues at the Boston Garden.
Following his pro career, Stewart rejoined his college coach, Mike Addesa, as an assistant hockey coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 1985, he helped RPI win the Division I ECAC and NCAA titles.
He later returned to Holy Cross as an assistant hockey coach for several years.
