Holy Cross Athletics

Coakley entered the Holy Cross Prep School in 1900 after hurling Providence East to two state championships. He was so good that he easily made the Holy Cross team.

During the 1901 season he won six and lost six, but the next season posted 10 triumphs in 13 decisions. Six of his victories were shutouts.

Coakley then went to the Philadelphia Athletics for a nine-year career in the major leagues. He won 59 and lost 59 while hurling for the Athletics.

After leaving the big leagues, Coakley coached many years at Columbia.
