Willie Turnesa was considered one of the best amateur golfers in history after Bobby Jones.

At Holy Cross, he won the New England Intercollegiate Championship three times (in 1936, 1937 and 1938), while leading his team to the New England Championship the same three years. He was also a two-time national medalist and ranked among the top golfers in the country.

Following graduation, he won the 1938 United States Amateur Championship and repeated in 1948. He also claimed the title at the 1947 British Amateur. In addition, he was a member of three winning Walker Cup teams and was captain of the 1951 squad.

In the mid-1950s, he co-founded the Westchester Golf Association Caddie Scholarship Fund, which has awarded millions of dollars to college students.
