Joe Dugan was at Holy Cross for just one year before he was signed to a lucrative contract by Connie Mack for the Philadelphia Athletics. During his lone season on Mount St. James in 1917, he led the Crusaders to an Eastern baseball championship while playing third base.  Dugan then went right to the major leagues and never played in the minors.

With Dugan leading the club in hitting, the Crusaders posted a 22-4 record in 1917. He had 33 hits in 86 trips to the plate for a.384 average. Three of the team’s four defeats that season were by a single run, while the other was a two-run game.

Dugan played for the Athletics until 1922, then joined the Boston Red Sox for 84 games before becoming a New York Yankee. He played in five world series with the Yankees and roomed with Babe Ruth. Dugan played in 1,446 major league games and had a lifetime average of .280.

He passed away in 1982.
