John Norton was a four-year starter on the baseball team from 1914-1917 and played on a pair of Eastern Championship teams. He had the unique and rare distinction of serving as baseball captain for two years, in both 1915 and 1917.

During his freshman season in 1914, Norton started at shortstop and helped lead the Crusaders to a 16-5-1 mark and the Eastern Championship. As a sophomore captain, he batted .270 with a team-best 30 hits as Holy Cross went 16-14 overall.

Following a junior year in which he hit .246 and the team went 10-8-2, Norton led the Crusaders to a 22-4 record and the Eastern Championship as a senior captain in 1917. He batted .275 during the 1917 season, with Holy Cross going 64-34-3 over the course of his career.

Norton served as a Navy officer for two years during World War I, played two years with Springfield in old Eastern League and then began a long career as a teacher in Boston, Newton and Somerville.

He passed away in 1977.
