Don Prohovich was an outstanding two-sport star for the Crusaders in basketball and baseball during the mid-1950s. He is one of a select few athletes in Holy Cross history to play in NCAA tournaments in two sports, while taking part in the postseason three times in basketball and twice in baseball.
In basketball, Prohovich was a starter on the Crusaders’ 1954 NIT championship team in addition to playing on squads which took part in the 1955 NIT and the 1956 NCAA Tournament. He helped Holy Cross to an overall record of 67-14 during his three years on the varsity, while totaling 428 points and 378 rebounds.
In baseball, Prohovich earned All-America honors as a second baseman. He played in the 1954 and the 1955 NCAA Tournaments and finished his senior year with a .356 batting average. After leading the Crusaders to a 41-11 record in his three varsity seasons, he played six years of professional baseball with the Chicago White Sox organization and was named Parade Magazine’s Minor League All-Star shortstop in 1959.
Prohovich went on to coach high school baseball for many years, and also spent three seasons as the head coach at Stonehill College.
