Bob Sullivan was a two-sport star for the Crusaders, serving as captain of both the football and baseball teams during his senior year.
Sullivan scored the first touchdown in Holy Cross’ memorable and historic 55-12 upset victory over Boston College in 1942. He left for the service for four years, but came back and was a unanimous choice for the O’Melia Award as the outstanding player in the 1947 Boston College game. All told, Sullivan played on three Holy Cross teams that defeated Boston College on the gridiron.
He was All-East and All-New England as a senior and also won the coveted Bulger Lowe Award as New England’s most outstanding football player in 1947.
Sullivan scored a touchdown on a pass from Johnny Lujack as he played for the winning East team in a 40-9 rout of West in the 1948 Shrine Game in San Francisco on New Year’s Day. He also played in the College All-Star game against the Chicago Cardinals in 1948 and played as a halfback for one season with the San Francisco 49ers.
