Holy Cross Athletics

Fran Dyson was a two-sport standout for the Holy Cross baseball and basketball teams from 1950-1953.

He was the first baseman on the Crusaders’ 1952 squad which won the NCAA championship, going eight for 24 (.333) with six runs batted in during the College World Series. Over the course of the 1952 season, Dyson hit .300 while leading the team with 175 putouts. He then hit .315 during his senior season in 1953, while once again leading the team to the NCAA Tournament.

In basketball, Dyson was considered one of the team’s top backcourt defenders, helping the squad to appearances in the 1952 National Invitation Tournament and the 1953 NCAA Tournament.

Over the course of his collegiate career, the Crusaders posted overall marks of 46-11 in base-ball and 64-15 in basketball.

Dyson would later return to Holy Cross as the head coach of the softball team from 1993-1997, earning Patriot League Coach of the Year honors in 1995.
