Tom Dowd never scored a touchdown, never made a basket and never hit a home run for Holy Cross, but he was one of the biggest alumni boosters of Crusader Athletics.

A nationally known and a very sought-after dinner speaker, Dowd was the toastmaster at the Varsity Club Hall of Fame Banquet for many years.

A 1923 Holy Cross graduate, Dowd spent many years as the traveling secretary and director of community relations for the Boston Red Sox. He also taught physics at Holy Cross for three years was athletic director and football and baseball coach at Loyola Prep in Baltimore.

He traveled more than a million miles with the Red Sox and often took Holy Cross students and prospective student-athletes to baseball games in cities where the Red Sox were playing.

Dowd was also a National Football League official for 16 years and a member of the Eastern College Football Officials Association.

Holy Cross honored Dowd in 1968 with its coveted In Hoc Signo Award for long and meritorious service. He passed away in 1976.
