Bernie McCafferty was a standout member of the Holy Cross track team.
He ran his first big race in January of 1929 at the Brooklyn Knights of Columbus meet and won the 500-yard run in a time of 58.7.
For the next three years, McCafferty was a star on the Crusaders’ one-mile relay teams. Holy Cross competed in all of the top events in Boston and New York, and it was usually McCafferty’s anchor leg kick that won the race.
In many of the big indoor meets, he also competed in 600-yard run. He won the Knights of Columbus 600-yard run three years in a row, retiring the famous Cardinal Hayes sterling silver bowl.
In addition, McCafferty was a standout in the outdoor middle distance events, and was the New England champion in the 440-yard run and the half-mile run for three years.
