Phil Flanagan was an outstanding football lineman for the Crusaders in the 1930s.

He played on Dr. Eddie Anderson’s first three teams at Holy Cross during the golden years of football on the Hill, with his teams going 24-4-1 overall. He was an outstanding two-way guard who played on the Crusaders’ unbeaten team (9-0-1) as a senior in 1935.

Flanagan played on three teams that never lost in Harvard Stadium, and he was usually the one who opened up the holes for his classmate and teammate Nick Morris. He was selected on Collier’s All-America team in 1935, was an AP third team All-America selection the same year and played in the 1936 Herald-Tribune Fresh Air Fund All-Star game in Yankee Stadium.

Flanagan later served as president of the Varsity Club. He passed away in 1987.
