After graduating from Leominster High School, Ronnie Cahill entered Holy Cross in the fall of 1936. As a sophomore in 1937, he teamed with Hank Giardi, Henry Ouellette and Bill Osmanski in what many regard as the best Holy Cross backfield ever. The Crusaders were unbeaten that year, going 8-0-2 overall.  Cahill starred in a huge game at Fenway Park against Georgia which Holy Cross won 7-6.

As a junior in 1938, Cahill helped lead the team to an overall record of 8-1. Then as a senior co-captain in 1939, the Crusaders posted an overall mark of 7-2. Over the course of Cahill's three varsity seasons, Holy Cross went 23-3-2 overall.

After graduation in 1940, Cahill played for the college all-star team that beat the New York Giants 16-7.  During that game, he completed 11 straight passes against the strong Giants defense. Cahill later played with the Chicago Cardinals in the National Football League.
