Gene Hebert was one of the great right handed pitchers for Jack Barry’s fine baseball teams from 1928-1930. He posted an overall record of 22-3 on the mound, while playing on several Eastern Intercollegiate Championship teams.

In 1929, Hebert became the mainstay of the pitching staff after Bots Nekola signed to play professionally. He turned down an offer by the Philadelphia Athletics to remain in college baseball and obtain his degree.

It was in 1929 that Hebert won all 11 games he started. Among his victims were Reading of the International League twice, Fordham twice, Harvard by a 25-0 score, Providence and Boston College. The last two were won by Holy Cross with Hebert going the route both times and with only two days rest. Holy Cross needed both games to win the Eastern Intercollegiate title, and Hebert proved up to the challenge by throwing a 2-0 shutout against Providence and beating Boston College 12-4.
