Chick Bowen was a star athlete at New Haven High School, and in 1915 was the captain of one of the greatest high school teams.

At Holy Cross he quickly established himself as a great outfielder and timely batter. The regular centerfielder for four years, he played in 106 games with a four-year batting average of .326.  His four-year record of never missing a game is an outstanding accomplishment. He was the captain of the 1919 team that won the Eastern Collegiate Championship with a record of 21 wins and just one loss.

Bowen went on to coach his high school alma mater for many years with legendary success, and sent a number of his players to Holy Cross.
