Ed Moriarty was a standout second baseman for the Holy Cross baseball team in the mid-1930s.

After hitting .300 as a sophomore, Moriarty led the team with a .354 batting average during his junior season. He was then named team captain for his senior year in 1935, when he hit .483 with 42 runs scored and 42 hits in 87 at-bats.

Holy Cross posted an overall record of 50-9 during Moriarty’s career and won the Eastern Championship in his senior season when they went 22-1.

Moriarty was probably best known for hitting the longest home run in the history over Fitton Field. During an exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox on April 23, 1934, he launched a shot to center field off Lefty Grove that was estimated to have traveled 490 feet.

Following his senior season, Moriarty received the John C. Lawlor Medal as the college’s most outstanding student-athlete. He went on to play two seasons with the Boston Braves, and was a career .300 hitter at the major league level.

Moriarty passed away in 1991.
