Msgr. Bill Fox made the Crusader varsity baseball club in 1895 while still a student in the prep school at Mount St. James. All told, he was the regular third baseman for six seasons and captained the teams of 1897 and 1898. He was the greatest third baseman of his era.

In his six seasons at Holy Cross, playing with such greats as Louis Sockalexis and Pat Carney, the baseball teams won 106 games, lost only 38 and tied 2.

His exceptional fielding and strong hitting resulted in contract offers from all eight of the National League teams when he graduated. He turned them down and chose to enter the seminary and become a member of the priesthood.
