Rosy Ryan was a Worcester native who pitched for the St. Paul Altar Boys and then at South High before entering Holy Cross.
He became an instant member of the Crusaders’ starting rotation as a freshman with a 9-2 record. He later threw the school's first no-hitter, a 4–0 victory over Dartmouth at Fitton Field on May 30, 1918, and was later signed by the New York Giants.
Ryan went on to play 10 years in the major leagues, with the Giants, Boston Braves, New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers. While pitching for the Giants, he led the National League with a 3.01 earned run average in 1922, and made a league-best 45 appearances in 1923. Ryan earned wins in game one of both the 1922 and 1923 World Series against the Yankees, and posted a 2.65 career earned run average in World Series action.
Following his playing career, Ryan managed the minor league Eau Claire Bears in 1941 and 1942, and the Minneapolis Millers from 1944 to 1946. He was later a minor league general manager.
Ryan passed away in 1980.
