Soon after entering Holy Cross, Dinneen quickly developed into an outstanding tennis player and became college champion by winning the largest tennis tourney in school history, beating a field of 94. In addition, Dinneen was a recognized authority on the history of Holy Cross athletics and a major organizer in the Varsity Club, having served as secretary for many years. He was also honored in 1970 by HC with the “In Hoc Signo” award for long and meritorious alumni services.
