William “Hiker” Joy was a member of the varsity relay team for four years and was captain of the Crusaders football and basketball teams during his senior year.
He served as the head football coach at Boston College from 1912 to the outbreak of World War I. He returned to collegiate football after the war as a scout for Princeton and then as an assistant to head coach Frank Cavanaugh at Boston College and Fordham. He later served as the head coach at Canisius College from 1933-1938, until retiring from sports. His career head coaching record was 32-24-5.
Joy later worked as an insurance broker and was a trustee of the Boston Elevated Railway.
