Phil O’Connell was a standout player for the Crusaders on the gridiron, serving as the captain of the 1931 football team.
He not only called signals to direct the play, but he was a super passer, a brilliant runner an excellent punter. On defense he was a daring tackler and gave many an exhibition of his ability and courage as a punt receiver. In addition to his exploits in football, O’Connell was a sure-handed shortstop on the baseball diamond. He had an accurate arm and was a potent hitter.
O’Connell later coached at St. John’s High School and Worcester Boys' Trade High School.
He was a founder of the Holy Cross Varsity Club, and served as the Club’s secretary, treasurer and president.
