Bill Merritt was a great middle distance runner for the Crusaders in the 1950s.

A three-time New England champion in the 440-yard run, Merritt also took first in the 440 in the BAA Games at the Boston Garden three times and received the John Briggs Trophy as the most valuable New England runner in the meet as a sophomore.

Merritt won two New England AAU titles in the 600-yard run, while placing third in the 600 at the IC4A Championship and fourth in the 600 at the National AAU Championship. He was ranked seventh among the middle distance runners in the world as a junior.

Following his graduation, Merritt went on to earn a degree from Harvard Law School.
