Edward O’Melia was a three-year starter at end for the Holy Cross football team in the 1930s.
He played on teams that posted an overall record of 24-2-4, and was the captain of the 1937 squad that went undefeated with an 8-0-2 record.
He also played in the College All-Star Game against New York Giants and then returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach.
O’Melia lost his life in World War II and subsequently he was honored with the creation of the O’Melia Award, which is given to the Most Valuable Player in the Holy Cross-Boston College game.
