Joe Liebler was a two-sport star on the Crusader basketball and baseball teams of the mid-1950s.

During his sophomore season on the basketball court, he helped Holy Cross to the National Invitation Tournament championship while scoring in double figures in every game of the tournament.

Liebler and the Crusaders advanced to the NIT again in his junior year, while making an NCAA Tournament appearance in his senior season. That year, he ranked second on the team in scoring to only Tommy Heinsohn, averaging 16.1 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.

Over the course of Liebler’s career on the hardwood, Holy Cross went 67-14.

On the baseball diamond, he earned All-New England honors while helping the squad to an overall record of 41-11 and a pair of NCAA postseason appearances.

During his junior season, Leibler led the team with a .368 batting average while going 2-0 with a 2.74 earned run average on the mound. He followed that with a senior year in which he went 7-1 with a 1.85 earned run average and 47 strikeouts.
