Jim Long spent decades as Holy Cross’ superintendent of grounds, and was in charge of maintaining and caring for the college’s athletic fields.
It would be difficult to find an area on campus Long did not reach with his personal touch, and nowhere more prominently than the carefully maintained athletic fields.
In addition to the visible excellence of the football fields, Long’s efforts resulted in new dugouts, a scoreboard, outfield fencing and several new playing fields behind the Hart Center.
Always willing to share his knowledge and talents with others, Long had 15 articles published in professional magazines dealing with grounds management and equipment.
His efforts resulted in numerous regional and national awards, including eight of which specifically recognized the excellence of Holy Cross’ varsity athletic fields.
