The varsity club, in an unprecedented move, inducted this late, great baseball star into its hall of fame in a special ceremony at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, Mass. Tunney had been seriously ill and had been a patient at St. Elizabeth’s for three months. He passed away two weeks after being the 54th inductee into the Hall of Fame.

Tunney played on the first Holy Cross team coached by Jack Barry in 1921. In his four years on the Crusader varsity, the team won 100 games, lost only nine and tied twice.

A standout pitcher, Tunney won 22 games and lost only two while at Holy Cross. As a freshman, he posted a 10-1 record and was a first team All-American. He had a 2-1 mark as a sophomore, missing most of the season with an injury. In 1923, Tunney went 6-0 as the Crusaders won the Eastern Intercollegiate Championship with a record of 28-2-1.

In his senior year, Tunney helped Holy Cross to an undefeated (18-0) season and another Eastern crown by winning four games. He later signed with the New York Giants.
