A remarkably gifted athlete, George Jones was a Worcester native who arrived at Holy Cross from St. John’s Prep. His yearbook described him this way: “‘Jigger’ displayed those gracefully monstrous underpinnings of his in a baseball, track, football and basketball suit.”

Jones was an exciting and speedy back on the football team. His consistent offensive production led his team to many victories and thrilled the fans at Fitton Field.

Jones was also a stellar second baseman for the baseball team for three years, serving as team captain in his last year. He was an outstanding fielder and a potent batter.

His speed made him a natural runner on the track and earned him a valuable spot in the dashes, where he contributed many points for Holy Cross in meets around New England.

Following graduation, Jones coached at St. John’s High School, St. John’s Prep and St. Ambrose College in football, baseball and track. After coaching he founded and ran the Horace Partridge Sporting Goods Store for many years until his retirement. He was also active in civic affairs, serving as Worcester County Commissioner for many years.
