Joe Higgins was a native of Worcester who migrated to New York City after graduation.
While at Holy Cross he rewrote the record book. He is considered the first national Holy Cross track star. He captained the undefeated 1916 track team and captured both the New England and the Eastern half-mile championships.
As one of the country’s top middle distance stars, he competed against and defeated such men as Ted Mordith of Pennsylvania, Bill Bingham of Harvard and J. Paul Jones of Cornell.
Higgins was also the star athlete for the old famous Irish-American Athletic Club of New York after graduation.
