THE BASICS

The Lead: Freshman Jake Sbarbaro (Lakewood, Colo.) nabbed two first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 freestyle as junior Tyler Wright (Waterboro, Maine) touched the wall first in the 100 and 200 butterfly as the Holy Cross men's swimming and diving team was edged by Providence, 153-145, on Saturday afternoon at Taylor Natatorium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

•  Holy Cross recorded seven first-place finishes versus Providence. 
•  The 200 meter medley relay team comprised of senior co-captains Thomas Horigan (West Hartford, Conn.) and Jack Swain (West Hartford, Conn.), Wright and Sbarbaro had the highest Crusader relay finish, taking first with a time of 1:48.53. 
•  Freshman Hayden Kucharski (Bloomfield, N.J.) touched the wall in second in the 800 freestyle with a time of 9:15.54 as junior David Mullany (Monroe, Conn.) followed in third at 9:16.13. 
• Sbarbaro clocked the first of his two first-place finishes in the 100 freestyle at 1:58 as he also took first in the 200 freestyle at 53.86. He also registered another top-three finish in the 200 IM, taking second at 2:13.20. 
• In the 100 backstroke, Horigan and freshman Ethan Nightingale (Yarmouth, Maine) finished back-to-back in second (1:02.70) and third (1:04.46), respectively. 
• Swain had a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke at 1:08.06 as sophomore Andrew Higgins (New Caanan, Conn.) came in third place at 1:09.71. Swain also registered a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 2:35.89. 
• Wright had two first-place finishes in the 100 (58.04) and 200 (2:14.15) butterfly, along with a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke at 2:16.81. 
• The 50 freestyle saw freshman Geneth Chin (South Windsor, Conn.) and sophomore Alex Young (Natick, Mass.) finish in the third and fourth spots at 25.54 and 25.52, respectively. 
• Following Wright in the 200 backstroke was Nightingale in third with his second top-three finish of the day, registering a time of 2:18.09. 
• Kucharski touched the wall in third in the 400 freestyle in third place and time of 4:27.10. 
• With both Providence and Holy Cross neck-and-neck, it all came down to the 400 freestyle relay. The relay team comprised of Chin, Kucharski, junior A.J. Zarrella (Wickford, R.I.) and Young clocked a second place finish at 3:47.56, missing first-place by 11 seconds. 
• On the diving side, senior co-captain Brendan Higgins (Summit, N.J.) had the top Crusaders finish in the one-meter dives, finishing in third (182.92) and first (204.67). 
• Freshman Jimmy Nugent and junior Rob Chevalier (Southbridge, Mass.) followed Higgins in the one-meter in second (202.12) and third (195.45), respectively. 

UP NEXT 

• The Crusaders return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 31 as they welcome Bryant to the Hart Center for the final dual meet of the season at 1:00 p.m.
