THE BASICS

The Lead: The Holy Cross men's swimming and diving took second place at the Worcester City Championship on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 16-17 at the Hart Center as the Crusaders placed second of three teams with an overall team score of 1,097 points. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

•  The 800 freestyle medley relay team made up of freshmen Hayden Kucharski (Bloomfield, N.J.) and Jake Sbarbaro (Lakewood, Colo.) and juniors David Mullany (Monroe, Conn.) and Tyler Wright (Waterboro, Maine) had the top Crusader finish, coming in third at 7:19.93. 
•  Sbarbaro took a first-place finish in the 200 IM at 2:02.84 with senior co-captain Jack Swain (West Harford, Conn.) following in eighth at 2:10.26. 
•  Mullany had the the top Crusader finish in the 1,650 freestyle, touching the wall in third at 17:51.98. 
•  In the 400 medley relay, the team comprised of Wright, Swain, Sbarbaro and freshman Geneth Chin (South Winston, Conn.) clocked a time of 3:40.28 and a third place finish as the 200 medley relay team of Chin, senior co-captain Thomas Horigan (West Hartford, Conn.), sophomore Alex Young (Natick, Mass.) and Wright finished second at 1:31.02.
• Kucharski and sophomore Andrew Higgins (New Caanan, Conn.) finished fourth and fifth in the 400 IM with times of 4:32.74 and 4:41.43, respectively. 
• Sbarbaro clocked a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle at 1:47.86 and third-place finish in the 100 butterfly at 54.57.
• Wright had three second-place finishes coming in the 100 backstroke (5.13), 200 butterfly (2:01.02) and 200 backstroke (2:01.03). 
• The Crusaders took the third and fourth spots with Swain taking third (1:02.28) and Higgins taking fourth (1:03.16). 
• In the 50 freestyle, the Crusaders captured the third through eighth spots. Horigan led in third (23.17), Chin in fourth (23.25), freshman John Williams (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) in fifth (23.32), Young in sixth (23.42) and senior Andrew Olivieri (Newark, Del.) rounding out the top finishes in eighth (23.65). 
• The 200 medley relay team comprised of Horigan, Swain, Wright and Sbarbaro finished in second place with a time of 1:39.60 and the top Crusader finish. 
• Young finished the 100 freestyle in seventh at 51.57 with junior A.J. Zarrella (Wickford, R.I.) following in 10th at 51.92. 
• Following Wright in the 200 backstroke was Kucharski in fourth place at 2:05.41 with freshman Ethan Nightingale (Yarmouth, Maine) coming in behind in fifth (2:05.86) and Horigan in sixth (2:07.53). 
• Swain, Higgins and senior Walker Lahr (Monticello, Mich.) finished in the fourth through sixth spots as Swain took fourth (2:20.34), Higgins in fifth (2:21.32) and Lahr in sixth (2:22.96). 
• In the 500 freestyle, Mullany finished in fourth with a time of 5:06.25. 
• The 400 freestyle relay team made up of Young, Kucharski, Chin and Sbarbaro registered the top Crusaders finish in third at a time of 3:21.09. 
• On the diving side, senior co-captain Brendan Higgins (Summit, N.J.) had the top Crusader finishes in both the one and three meter dives, finishing in third in the one (363.15 points) and second in the three (330.82 points).

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE 

• Holy Cross finished in second of three teams with an overall score of 1,097 points as the 2014 WCC champions won the title once again with a team score of 1,267 points 
• Clark followed Holy Cross, taking third with 527 points. 

UP NEXT 

• The Crusaders return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 24 as they travel to Providence at 1:00 p.m.
