THE BASICS

The Lead: Freshman Jake Sbarbaro (Lakewood, Colo.) broke the Holy Cross record in the 400 IM (4:11.11) as the 200 medley relay team consisting of senior captains Jack Swain (West Hartford, Conn.) and Thomas Horigan (West Hartford, Conn.), junior Tyler Wright (Waterboro, Maine) and freshman Geneth Chin (South Winston, Conn.) broke the meet record at 1:37.96. The men's swimming team placed third of six teams at the Harold Anderson Invitational on Friday and Saturday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

•  The relay teams posted three third-place finishes. 
•  The 400 medley relay team consisting of Swain, Wright, Sbarbaro and sophomore Alex Young (Natick, Mass.) finished with a time of 3:35.39. 
•  In the 200 freestyle relay, the team made up Wright, Chin, Horigan and Sbarbaro touched the wall in third at 1:28.46.
•  The 200 medley relay team of Horigan, Wright, Chin and Swain broke the meet record, finishing third with a time of 1:37.96. 
•  The 400 freestyle saw two Holy Cross teams with top-10 finishes. Sbabaro, Chin and freshman Hayden Kucharski (Bloomfield, N.J.) finished fourth (3:18.64). The team comprised of freshmen A.J. Zarrella (Wickford. R.I.) and Ethan Nightingale (Yarmouth, Maine), junior David Mullany (Monroe, Conn.) and senior Andrew Olivieri (Newark, Del.) finished seventh with a time of 3:24.45. 
• In the 500 freestyle, Mullany finished eleventh at 5:05.04 as senior captain Michael Noone (Stamford, Conn.) finished 15th at 5:16.97. 
• The 200 IM saw Kucharski finish in fourth at 2:03.54.
• Holy Cross had two top 10- finishes in the 50 freestyle coming from Horigan and Chin. Horigan took fifth (22.34) as Chin tied with Maine's Kevin Clyne in eighth (22.71). 
• Sbarbaro had his first of three top-10 finishes in the 400 IM finishing at 4:11.11, breaking a Holy Cross record originally set by Mike Emmons at 4:12.17. He also finished first in the 200 butterfly (1:35.55) and tied for third in the 200 freestyle with Providence's Justin Tse at 1:46.68. 
• Wright had two individual top-10 finishes on the day, placing third in the 100 butterfly (53.09) and the 200 backstroke (1:57.77). 
• In the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Andrew Higgins (New Caanan, Conn.) finished second with a time of 1:01.36, as Swain and freshman Mark Mueller (Weymouth, Mass.) finished in third (1:01.37) and eighth (1:04.55). 
• Horigan finished fourth in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in fourth at 55.08 as Nightingale followed in ninth at 57.23. 
• In the 1,000 freestyle, Mullany finished in fourth place with a time of 10:29.10. 
• Following Wright in the 200 backstroke was Horigan, touching the wall in seventh with a time of 2:02.00. 
• Higgins had a third place finish in the 200 breaststroke at 2:14.02 as Swain followed in eighth at 2:18.95. 
• On the diving side, Holy Cross swept the fifth through seventh spots. Senior captain Brendan Higgins (Summit, N.J.) finished in fifth with a score of 166.90 as junior Rob Chevalier (Southbridge, Mass.) took sixth (151.80) and freshman Jimmy Nugent took seventh (143.40). 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE 

• Holy Cross finished third of five teams with an overall team score of 674 points as Bryant University took first overall with a team score of 856.50. 

UP NEXT 

• The Crusaders will open the new year on Friday, Jan. 16 and Saturday, Jan. 17 after a break as they get set to host the Worcester City Championship at the Hart Center.
