PROVIDENCE, R.I.— The Holy Cross track and field teams opened the new year at the UMass Amherst Winter Opener on Sunday, Jan. 12. Freshman Josh Gentchos broke the indoor 200m school record (22.13).

MEN'S MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

• Gentchos broke the indoor 200m school record with a time of 22.13 to finish seventh in the event. Garrett Fortin set the previous record (22.16) at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 9, 2019. Gentchos also came in fifth in the 60m dash (7.07).
• Junior captain Liam Lyons won the 3000m (8:27.15) followed by sophomore Joseph Mahon in third (8:31.75) and senior captain William Schimitsch in fifth (8:37.68).
• Freshman Khalil Antoine won the high jump (2.11m). Sophomores Chandler Dicks (2.00m, third) and Michel Mondesir (1.95m, sixth) as well as senior Kevin Yatsuhashi (1.95m, eighth) also competed in the event.
• Freshman Brendan Rogers claimed third in the 400m (49.06) and sophomore Tristan Miller in finished seventh (49.68).
• Senior captain Josh Exantus took fourth in the 60m hurdles (8.35). Sophomore Matthew Perkins also competed in the event finishing sixth (8.58).
• Freshman Tireni Asenuga placed seventh in the triple jump (12.95m).
• The 4x400m relay team including junior Miller, Rogers, senior Andrew Van De Mark and sophomore Luke Boothroyd took fourth place with a time of 3:23.20.

WOMEN'S MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

• Junior Celia Kulis won the 60m hurdles (8.80) followed by seniors Ella Grey (8.97, fourth) and captain Lauren Clark (9.21, seventh). 
• Senior captain Haley Murphy clinched second in the 500m (1:14.49) and senior Helene Cummings finished seventh (1:19.16). Both set new personal bests in the event.
• Freshman Abby Desmarais claimed third in the 200m (25.34) and fourth in the 60m (7.74).
• Sophomore Bridget Sachs and senior captain Maura Switzer tied for fourth in the pole vault (3.50m).
• Sophomore Annabel Murray placed sixth in the 800m (2:22.78).
• Senior captain Abby Hughes came in sixth in the 3000m (10:04.18).
• Sophomore Alyssa Peasley finished sixth in the high jump (1.50m).
• Sophomore Gabby Paolella (11.90m, sixth) and freshman Lily Deforge (11.22m, seventh) competed in the shot put.
• Junior Ester Mokonchu took seventh in the weight throw (14.60m).
• The 4x400m relay team including Cummings, freshman Danielle DiEsso, sophomore Lindsay Gill and Murphy took fourth place with a time of 3:56.72.
• The 4x800m relay team including junior Fiona Doherty, senior Shannon Jordan, junior captain Alex Lusby and Murray clinched second place with a time of 9:28.91.

NEXT UP:

• The Holy Cross track and field teams will head to Kingston, R.I. to compete at the Rhode Island Invitational on Jan. 18.
