WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross head men's ice hockey coach
Bill Riga has announced the program's incoming class for the 2024-25 season. The slate of new Crusaders consists of seven freshmen:
Ryan Buckley,
Owen Kim,
Malachi Klassen,
Matt Kursonis,
Ben LeFranc,
Edward Moskowitz, and
Jarrod Smith, and three transfers,
Michael Abgrall,
Lach Getz, and
Timothy Heinke.
"We are happy to welcome our new class to Holy Cross this summer," said coach Riga. "We have a great collection of players to add to our roster that will add talent and depth to our roster. The veterans will do a great job integrating them into our program and moving us forward."

Michael Abgrall | F | 5'11" | 180 | Richmond, British Columbia | Omaha (NCHC)
- Played two seasons at Omaha (NCHC) under head coach Mike Gabinet.
- Played two seasons with the Powell River Kings (2018-20) and two seasons with the Surrey Eagles (2020-22) of the BCHL, recording 101 points in 132 games.
Ryan Buckley | D | 6'1" | 195 | Warwick, R.I. | Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL)
- Played for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL) for the 2023-24 season under head coach Joe Martin.
- Was named the Alberni Valley player of the month for Jan. 2024.
- Also played for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks (BCHL) for the 2022-23 season under head coach Tyler Shattock.
- Helped the Silverbacks to the 2022-23 Interior Conference Finals.
- Finished BCHL career with ten points in 90 games, and three points in 20 playoff games.
- Also played four seasons of varsity hockey at St. George's School in Middletown, R.I. under head coach Jeff Dwyer.
- Earned First Team All-ISL honors as a sophomore (2019-20) and senior (2021-22).
- Finished career at St. George's with 40 points on six goals and 34 assists in 82 games.
Lach Getz | D | 6'3" | 200 | Naples, Fla. | Michigan Tech (CCHA)
- Spent the 2023-24 season at Michigan Tech (CCHA) under head coach Joe Shawhan, recording three points in 28 games for the Huskies.
- Helped the team to a CCHA championship and was named to the CCHA All-Academic Team.
- Played for Boston University (HEA) under head coach Jay Pandolfo in the 2022-23 season.
- Appeared in 16 games, making his collegiate debut in a 7-2 win over UMass on Nov. 11, 2022.
- Earned a spot on the Hockey East All-Academic Team.
- Played juniors for the Chilliwack Chiefs (BCHL) under head coach Brian Maloney.
- Served as an assistant captain for the 2021-22 season.
- Finished his career in Chilliwack with 27 points on five goals and 22 assists in 67 games.
- Earned the John Tunnicliffe Most Improved Award and the Orland Kurtenbach Top Defenseman Award following the 2021-22 season.
- Also played four seasons of varsity hockey at The Lawrenceville School under head coaches Etienne Bilodeau and Keith Dupee.
- Served as a team captain as a senior.
- Finished his career at Lawrenceville with 63 points on 13 goals and 50 assists in 105 games and won the 2019-20 Mid-Atlantic Hockey League championship.
- Was named a Mid-Atlantic Hockey League All-Area First Team honoree, the 2019-20 Trentonian Player of the Year, and the 2017-19 R. Inslee Clark Award for most academic gains for Woodhull House.
Timothy Heinke | F | 6'1" | 200 | Southington, Conn. | Quinnipiac (ECAC)
- Played two seasons at Quinnipiac (ECAC) under head coach Rand Pecknold, recording four assists in 16 games.
- Was a part of the Bobcats' 2023 National Championship team and was named to the ECAC All-Academic Team.
- Played juniors for the South Shore Kings (NCDC) under head coach Drew Omicioli.
- Served as team captain in the 2021-22 season and amassed 49 points on 34 goals and 15 assists in 43 games.
- Played four seasons of varsity high school hockey at Avon Old Farms under head coach John Gardner.
- Finished his career at Avon with 37 points on 16 goals and 21 assists in 80 games, and earned the Man of Avon Award.
Owen Kim | F | 5'9" | 165 | North Vancouver, British Columbia | Vernon Vipers (BCHL)
- Played three seasons with the Vernon Vipers (BCHL) under head coach Lukas Lomicky.
- Earned the 2024 BCHL Playoff Most Valuable Player award.
- Was named the 2022 and 2023 Energy Player of the Year, and the 2022 Unsung Hero.
- Finished BCHL career with 101 points in 150 games.
Malachi Klassen | G | 6'2" | 185 | Winkler, Manitoba | Winkler Flyers (MJHL)
- Played juniors for the Winkler Flyers (MJHL) under head coach Justin Falk.
- Earned the 2024 Playoff Most Valuable Player award following the team's MJHL Championship win.
- Earned the team's Community Involvement award in both 2023 and 2024.
- Finished Flyers career with a 59-25 record with a 2.40 goals-against average and .917 save percentage in 95 games.
Matt Kursonis | F | 6'1" | 195 | West Boylston, Mass. | Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL)
- Played for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL) under head coach Joe Martin.
- Scored 73 points on 35 goals and 28 assists in 100 games.
- Helped the team to the Fred Page Cup finals in 2022-23.
- Was named the team's Most Improved Player following the 2022-23 season after recording 25 points in 46 regular-season games and 12 points in 16 playoff games.
- Also played four years of varsity hockey at St. George's School in Middletown, R.I. under head coach Jeff Dwyer.
- Served as a team captain as a senior, also earning the team's Most Valuable Player award.
- Finished career at St. Marks with 53 points on 30 goals and 23 assists in 82 games.
Ben LeFranc | D | 5'10" | 178 | Penticton, British Columbia | Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL)
- Played three seasons with the Prince George Spruce Kings (BCHL) under head coach Alex Evin.
- Recorded 52 points on 14 goals and 28 assists in 132 career games.
- Was named the 2020-21 Scholastic Player of the Year, 2021-22 Most Improved Player, and 2022-23 Best Defenseman.
- Also played one season of varsity hockey at Penticton Secondary School under head coach Craig Bedard.
- Recorded 18 points on six goals and 12 assists in 35 games.
Edward Moskowitz | F | 5'11" | 200 | Toronto, Ontario | Blackfalds Bulldogs (AJHL)
- Played for the Blackfalds Bulldogs (AJHL) for the 2023-24 season under head coach Doug Quinn.
- Helped the team to a franchise record 11-game win streak.
- Recorded 35 points on ten goals and 25 assists in 22 games.
- Played for the Wellington Dukes (OJHL) in the 2022-23 season.
- Scored 71 points on 33 goals and 38 assists in 53 games, and 14 points on eight goals and six assists in 14 playoff games.
- Was named the OJHL Player of the Month for Dec. 2022, and an OJHL All-Star following the season.
- Played one season of varsity hockey at Upper Canada College.
Jarrod Smith | F | 5'10" | 180 | West Vancouver, British Columbia | Cranbrook Bucks (BCHL)
- Played four seasons for the Cranbrook Bucks (BCHL) under head coach Ryan Donald.
- Served as an assistant captain for the 2023-24 season.
- Earned the team's Scholastic Player Award in both 2020-21 and 2021-22, and the Coaches' Award in 2022-23.
- Finished Bucks' career with 47 points.
- Also played two seasons of varsity hockey at West Vancouver Secondary under head coach Enio Sacilatto.
- Finished career with 56 points and served as a captain.
