Men's hockey hits the road to face Sacred Heart this weekend

The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team heads on the road to face Atlantic Hockey opponent Sacred Heart on Friday, Jan. 20 and Saturday, Jan. 21. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. both nights at Martire Family Arena in Fairfield, Conn. The contests will stream live through FloHockey.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (7-13-2, 6-7-1 AHA):
  • The Crusaders swept Air Force, 5-2, 4-1, last weekend to move up to fifth in the AHA and improve their overall record to 7-13-2, with a 6-7-1 conference record.
  • Senior defenseman Nick Hale was named the Atlantic Hockey Defensive Player of the Week following the series against Air Force. Hale skated in his 100th game on Friday night, and picked up three assists in the 5-2 win, before following it up with another three assist performance in Sunday's 4-1 win. Hale was also an integral piece of the defensive unit that helped the Crusaders out-score the Falcons 9-3 over the two nights. This was his second nod of the season, and fourth of his career.
  • Junior Jason Grande was named the Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week after backstopping the Crusaders to a second sweep of Air Force this season. Grande stopped 46-of-49 shots faced, giving him a 1.51 goals-against average and .939 save percentage over the two nights. Only two of the goals allowed were even strength, as he helped the Crusaders penalty kill stop 11-of-12 power play opportunities by Air Force. This was Grande's second nod of the season, with the first coming last month after the last Air Force series, Dec. 4-5.
  • Freshman Devin Phillips received an Honorable Mention for AHA Rookie of the Week after scoring his first two collegiate goals in the series against Air Force.
  • Junior Jack Ricketts leads the squad in goals (9) and points (15). Hale leads the team in assists with seven. Grande holds a team-best 6-3-1 record, 2.47 goals against average and .912 save percentage.

SCOUTING SACRED HEART (11-9-1, 10-4-1 AHA):
  • Sacred Heart enters the matchup on a two-game losing streak, with a 5-5-0 record in their last ten games.
  • In their last game on Saturday, Jan. 14, the Pioneers were defeated by No. 19/20 Boston College, 3-2, in overtime.
  • The Pioneers' 10-4-1 (31 points) conference record places them in second in the AHA, while the Crusaders sit in fifth with a 6-7-1 (21 points) record.
  • Todd Goehring leads the team with nine goals, while Neil Shea leads in assists (12) and points (19). Netminder Luke Lush holds a team-best 9-8-1 record with a 2.28 goals-against average and .909 save percentage.

LAST TIME THEY MET:
  • All time, the Crusaders are 42-39-5 against the Pioneers.
  • In their last ten matchups, the Crusaders are 3-7-0 against the Pioneers.
  • This is the second series of the season between Holy Cross and Sacred Heart. In Worcester at the beginning of the season, the Pioneers swept the Crusaders, 3-2, 5-1 in consecutive nights.
