The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team is set to travel to Tempe, Ariz. for a two-game set against Arizona State on Friday, Oct. 9 at 10 p.m. ET and Saturday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. ET at Mullins Arena. Both games will stream live on NCHC.tv.

THE CRUSADERS (1-1-0, 0-0-0 AHA):
  • Holy Cross earned a series split with Maine to open the 2026-27 season.
  • Senior Connor Welsh's overtime goal 1:33 into the extra period in Saturday's game gave Holy Cross their first win over Maine for the first time since 1978.
  • Prior to the win over Maine, the last time the Crusaders defeated a Hockey East team was on Oct. 11, 2024 when they defeated UConn, 4-3, at the Hart Center.
  • Senior Matt Kursonis earned his second career Atlantic Hockey Forward of the Week honor following the series with Maine. Kursonis scored the first goal of the season for Holy Cross on Friday night, picking up a deflected pass on the penalty kill and taking it the length of the ice for a shorthanded strike, Holy Cross' first shorthanded goal since 2025.
  • On Saturday, Kursonis once again scored the first goal of the game for the Crusaders, picking his corner for the 1-0 lead in the eventual 3-2 overtime win. Kursonis was dominant at the faceoff dot on Saturday, leading both sides with 14 wins.
  • Kursonis enters the weekend tied for the Atlantic Hockey lead in goals (2) and second in faceoff wins (22).
  • Sophomore Danick Leroux recorded 52 saves over the two games, posting 26 each night. Of the five goals that got by Leroux, only one was scored five-on-five (two four-on-four, two power play). Leroux enters the weekend with a 2.50 goals-against average (third in Atlantic Hockey) and .912 save percentage (fourth in Atlantic Hockey).
  • Senior Will Elias recorded 12 blocked shots over the Maine series - including a single-game career-high seven on Friday. The next closest player - Northern Michigan's Noah Houle - registered eight.
  • All-time, Holy Cross is 0-8-2 against NCHC opponents, having faced Arizona State, North Dakota, and Western Michigan previously.

SCOUTING ARIZONA STATE (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHC):
  • Arizona State began its season with a trip to Lindonwood, splitting the series. In Friday's opener, Arizona State won by a commanding 5-0 score, before falling on Saturday, 9-6.
  • The Sun Devils return 11 players from their 2025-26 campaign that saw them go 14-21-1 with a 7-16-1 record in the NCHC.
  • Arizona State added 17 players this season, seven of which are freshmen, and have seven NHL Draft Picks on their roster.
  • The Sun Devils enter the weekend 24-8-1 all-time against Atlantic Hockey teams.
