Holy Cross Athletics

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team defeated Arizona State, 2-1, Friday night at Mullett Arena.

The Crusaders improve to 2-1 with the win, while the Sun Devils move to 1-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Neither team was able to score through the first two periods, with Arizona State killing off two penalties in the first and one in the second and Holy Cross killing off three penalties in the second.
• The Sun Devils put the pressure on in the second period, registering 16 shots - only two of which were on the power play -  to the Crusaders' 4.
• It was Arizona State that struck first, finding the back of the net on their 38th shot of the night.
• Sophomore Quinn McCall tied the game at 1-1 with 1:25 to play, within a second of the Crusaders' pulling the netminder for the extra attacker. Sending a one-timer off a pass from sophomore Ben Riche, McCall's shot found its way through the crowd and between the legs of the Sun Devil's netminder.
• 11 seconds later, Riche recorded his first goal as a Crusader, sneaking behind the Arizona State defense and netting a one-timer off a pass from junior Matt Kursonis.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

• Sophomore Danick Leroux recorded 39 saves in net, his highest mark of the season and second-highest mark of his career.
• The Crusaders blocked 24 shots compared to the Sun Devils' six, with McCall leading the way with four. Senior Will Elias picked up two in the contest, and continues to lead the nation in the category with 14 blocks through three games.

• The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Oct. 10, at 3 p.m. MST (6 p.m. ET).
