Men’s soccer set for game at Sacred Heart

The Holy Cross men's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 3, when it heads to Sacred Heart for a 6:00 p.m. game.

Things to Know About the Crusaders (0-2, 0-0 Patriot League):
• Holy Cross stands 0-2 so far this year, dropping its first two games to Manhattan (2-0) and Connecticut (2-0).
• The Crusaders are coming off a 2021 season in which they went 8-8-3 overall and placed third in the Patriot League with a 5-3-1 mark in conference play. Holy Cross has qualified for the Patriot League Tournament in each of the last two seasons.
• Sophomore forward Evan Jones looks to be the top offensive threat for Holy Cross this fall, after being selected to the 2022 preseason All-Patriot League team. Last year, Jones was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year and the ECAC Rookie of the Year, in addition to earning second team All-Patriot League honors. He played in all 19 of Holy Cross' games in 2021, starting 13 times and leading the team with 22 points on eight goals and six assists. Jones finished the year tied for the Patriot League lead in goals, while his 22 points were the most by a Crusader in a single season since 2006.
• Senior midfielder Matt McGonigle, senior midfielder Jack Ostrosky and senior defender Taj Salawu are serving as the Crusaders' captains this season.

Scouting the Pioneers (0-2, 0-0 NEC):
• Sacred Heart has an 0-2 record on the season, falling to Siena (1-0) and Massachusetts (4-0).
• Senior goalkeeper Justin Siegel has a 2.59 goals against average with five saves so far this year
• Freshman midfielder Javier Lopez Cayuela has attempted a team-high four shots through two games played.

Series History:
• Holy Cross holds a 10-8-0 lead in the all-time series with Sacred Heart, including a 4-1-0 mark in the last five meetings.
• The Crusaders and the Pioneers last played on Sept. 4, 2021, when Holy Cross won 2-0 in Worcester. Max Krause and Dylan Scanley both scored goals for the Crusaders, while Jimmy Joyce posted his first career shutout with two saves.
