Field hockey set for weekend pair

The Holy Cross field hockey team will face two opponents from the Northeast Conference this weekend. The Crusaders will begin with a trip to Fairfield, Conn. on Sept. 2 for a matchup at University Field for a 4 p.m. game, followed by a contest on Sept. 4 against Saint Francis hosted by the Crusaders, but played at Providence College's Lennon Family Field at noon.
 
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE CRUSADERS (1-1)
  • Holy Cross returns to New England after a trip to California where they took Stanford into overtime and fell 2-1 on Aug. 26 and beat UC Davis 3-2 on Aug. 27.
  • Senior midfielder Sinead Walsh notched one goal and one assist in the battle against the Aggies.
  • Senior defender Gabby Venezia tallied her first career goal in the matchup against UC Davis.
 
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE STAGS (0-2)
  • Fairfield has suffered two losses on the road to start the season. They fell 1-3 to both Monmouth and Villanova.
  • The Stags are the back-to-back defending Northeast Conference champions and were selected as the preseason favorites for the title.
  • Fairfield and Holy Cross last faced off on Oct. 6, 2019, when the Crusaders fell 1-3.
 
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE RED FLASH (0-2)
  • This is Saint Francis' second year back in the Northeast Conference.
  • Two All-NEC second-team selections return for the Red Flash in Claudia Ortiz and Eva Valentini.
  • The last time Holy Cross took on Saint Francis was during the 2021 season opener on Aug. 27 when the Crusaders emerged with the 3-0 victory.
  • Walsh, junior forward Allie McDonough and sophomore forward Meggan Fourie all scored against the Red Flash.
