Field hockey wins thriller over Stonehill

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team defeated Stonehill, 3-2, on Friday night at the Hart Turf Field.

Holy Cross improves to 2-3 on the season with the win, while Stonehill moves to 0-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A quiet first quarter saw Holy Cross out-shoot Stonehill 3-1, though neither team was able to score.
  • The Skyhawks broke the scoreless tie on a buzzer-beating score that crossed the goal line just before the halftime horn went to give Stonehill a 1-0 lead going into the break.
  • Holy Cross tied the game at 1-1 on an attacking penalty corner. Senior Megan Schienbein sent a pass across the top of the circle to junior Magure Sturgis, who was able to find the back of the net.
  • The Crusaders took the lead just under three minutes later when Sturgis sent a shot on net that trickled through the Skyhawks' netminders' legs, which freshman Martina di Gregorio Giralt tapped across the line for her second goal of the season.
  • Sophomore Kendall Brady scored the eventual game-winning goal with just under seven minutes to play in the final frame after Sturgis won an endline scrum, lifting the ball over the out-stretched Stonehill netminder for Brady to tap into the net.
  • The Skyhawks struck to bring the lead back to one on a penalty corner with 3:30 remaining in regulation. Stonehill picked up another corner opportunity with 36 seconds remaining, but were unable to get the shot off.
BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Sophomore Mia McCloskey made eight saves in her second win of the season.
  • Freshman Rachel Egan picked up her first collegiate defensive save with 11:07 remaining in the fourth quarter to keep the Crusaders' lead at 2-1.
  • Sturgis' four points in the contest were her second-highest of the season, and of her career, for a single game.
