The Lead: Senior Sean Kirkpatrick posted a career-best five goals and six points but the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Brown, 17-14, on Tuesday night. Senior Marc Buermann scored four goals, while senior Kevin Lux tallied one goal and four assists for five points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After Jack Collins gave Brown an early 1-0 lead, the Crusaders netted three straight goals to take a 3-1 advantage with 3:52 left in the first quarter. Kirkpatrick, Buermann and junior Logan LeBlond each found the back of the net.
- Matt Graham then cut the Crusader lead to 3-2, but senior Jack Ortlieb and Buermann closed out the half with goals as Holy Cross took a 5-2 lead to the second quarter.
- With the Crusaders now leading 5-3, Kirkpatrick posted a goal to increase the lead to 6-3.
- After Dylan Molloy scored for Brown, Kirkpatrick and senior Jon Vogel answered with a goal each as the Crusaders led by an 8-4 score with 10:32 remaining in the second quarter.
- The Bears then tallied three consecutive goals to make it a 8-7 game, but a goal by Vogel with just three seconds left gave the Crusaders a 9-7 lead at the half.
- Brown scored the first four goals of the third quarter to move out to an 11-9 advantage.
- Kirkpatrick then scored on an extra-man opportunity for his fourth goal of the contest. The Bears then responded with five straight goals for a 16-10 lead with 11:36 left in the fourth quarter.
- But the Crusaders answered with four consecutive goals to cut the Brown lead to just 16-14 with 3:36 remaining in the fourth quarter. Buermann netted two goals, while senior Kevin Lux and Kirkpatrick also scored.
- With just nine seconds left, Molloy found the back of the net for the 17-14 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro posted 14 saves, while Brown goalkeeper Phil Goss posted six for the win.
- Brown outshot Holy Cross, 60-35.
- The Bears picked up 20 ground balls, while the Crusaders tallied 19.
- Brown won 24 face-offs, while Holy Cross secured nine.
- The Crusaders went 2-4 on extra-man opportunities, while the Bears went 4-6.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Kirkpatrick's five goals and six points were a career best. He now has two career hat tricks.
- Buermann entered the game with the seventh longest scoring streak in the nation. After today's game he has now scored at least one goal in the last 15 games.
- The hat trick for Buermann was his second of the season and the fifth of his career. He now has 65 goals and 24 assists for 89 career points.
- Lux has 60 goals, 35 assists and 95 career points.
- Tesoro made a career-best 14 saves.
