Field Hockey Earns 3-2 Victory Over UMass Lowell

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Holy Cross 3, UMass Lowell 2 
  • Records: Holy Cross (2-1), UMass Lowell (2-1)

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior midfielder Kaitlyn Murray (Farmington, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal in the 69th minute to help lead the Crusaders to a 3-2 triumph over UMass Lowell in non-conference field hockey action on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders tallied the first goal of the contest in the 20th minute (19:55), as junior forward Katy Cronin (Franklin, Mass.) received a pass from senior midfielder Michelle McNeil (Canton, Mass.) and launched a long shot off the post an into the cage.
  • The River Hawks answered less than thirty seconds later (20:24) with a goal of their own off the stick of Georgia Cowderoy to knot the score at 1-1.
  • Holy Cross, however, countered just over a minute later (21:39), as freshman forward Maureen Connolly (New Canaan, Conn.) capitalized on a breakaway chance to give the Crusaders the 2-1 lead.
  • UMass Lowell used a strong push at the end of the first half to tie the game back up at 2-2 (34:33), as Kristin Aveni scored on a scramble in from of the cage off a pass by Cowderoy.
  • Murray tallied the game-winning goal at the 68:33 mark of the contest. Off a direct corner from McNeil, she stopped the ball on her stick and launched a hard shot into the back of the net to clinch the win for Holy Cross.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Crusader sophomore goalkeeper Maya Langman (Crozet, Va.) picked up the win (1-0) with three saves in the second half. Holy Cross senior goalie Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) made four saves in the first half. UMass Lowell netminder Kelsey Federico (2-1) pushed aside two shots in the contest.
  • UMass Lowell held the advantages in shots (17-12), shots on goal (9-5) and penalty corners (7-6).

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Holy Cross' 2-1 record is its best start since the 2006 season.
  • The goal by Connolly was the first of her career, while McNeil posted a career-best two assists in the game.
  • The Crusaders are now on a 10-game winning streak over the River Hawks and hold an 11-3 record all-time.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 7, when it will travel to Harvard for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
