Field Hockey Defeated By Sacred Heart, 2-0

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Sacred Heart 2, Holy Cross 0 
  • Records: Sacred Heart (4-2); Holy Cross (2-5) 
  • Location: Worcester, Mass. (Hart Turf Field)
  • The Lead: Sacred Heart junior Liz Bergman scored the game-winning goal in the 20th minute to help lead the Pioneers to a 2-0 victory over Holy Cross in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday evening at the Hart Turf Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In a game that was highlighted by both teams' stingy defenses, the Pioneers tallied the opening goal of the contest on their first shot on net in the 20th minute (20:00). Bergman secured a loose ball in the middle of the circle and launched a shot that found the back of the net to give Sacred Heart the 1-0 lead.
  • Crusader freshman forward Maureen Connolly (New Canaan, Conn.) had an opportunity to tie the game in the 28th minute with a shot on goal from the right side, but Pioneer goalkeeper Mary Altepeter pushed the chance away.
  • Holy Cross had a back-to-back penalty corners in the 58th and 59th minutes, but the Sacred Heart backline stood tall and did not allow a Crusader shot on goal.
  • The Pioneers scored the second goal of the game in the 65th minute (64:57). Lauren Harrison ripped a shot from the left side of the circle and Christine Mace redirected the ball past Holy Cross senior goalkeeper Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) to make the score its final, 2-0.    

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Altepeter made one save in the shutout effort, while Matchett also made one stop.
  • Neither offense could put together many scoring chances, as Sacred Heart held the 5-3 edge in shots and the 3-1 advantage in shots on goal. Both squads had three penalty corners apiece.
  • Sacred Heart improves to 4-3 all-time in games versus the Crusaders.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, when it will open Patriot League action with an 11:00 a.m. road game at Colgate.
