THE BASICS:

•The Lead: Longwood forward Jennifer Burris scored the game-winning goal in the 44th minute to help lead the Lancers to a 1-0 win over Holy Cross in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The two teams struggled offensively in the first half as the Lancers outshot the Crusaders 7-2. Holy Cross senior forward Molly Feit (Acton, Mass.) had a shot on goal in the 25th minute, but Longwood defender Kate Harvey preserved the shutout with a defensive save.
• At the 43:47 mark of the game, Burris gathered a rebound off Crusader senior goalkeeper Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) and drove the ball into the back of the cage to give Longwood the 1-0 lead.
• Holy Cross had a chance to tie in the 68th minute with a penalty corner opportunity, but Crusader freshman forward Maureen Connolly (New Canaan, Conn.) just missed the net with her shot.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• Matchett made five stops for Holy Cross, while Longwood netminder Lauren Bernard made was not called upon to make a save in the shutout.
• Longwood held the 17-4 edge in total shots and a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal . The Lancers also held the 4-1 margin in penalty corners.

• Holy Cross returns to action on Friday, September 5 when it travels to Lowell, Mass. to take on UMass Lowell at 7:00 p.m.
