Field Hockey Defeated By Lafayette, 2-0

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Lafayette 2, Holy Cross 0
  • Records: Lafayette (5-6; 1-2 PL); Holy Cross (3-10, 0-3 PL)
  • Location: Worcester, Mass. (Hart Turf Field)
  • The Lead: Lafayette senior Kelsey Mead scored the game-winning goal in the 33rd minute to help lift the Leopards to a 2-0 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League field hockey action on Saturday morning at the Hart Turf Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After being held scoreless on its first seven shots of the game, Lafayette broke the stalemate in the 33rd minute (32:52). Mead received a pass from Ami Turner in the middle of the circle and slipped the ball past Holy Cross senior goalkeeper Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) to give the Leopards the 1-0 lead.
  • Holy Cross had a chance to tie the game in the 35th minute, as senior forward Molly Feit (Acton, Mass.) had a shot on goal, but Lafayette goalkeeper Katelyn Arnold made the save.
  • Lafayette had a shot on goal in both the 40th and 44th minute, but Matchett was able to make the pair of saves to keep the deficit at one.
  • The Crusaders' best opportunity to tie the game came in the 51st minute off a penalty corner. Holy Cross junior defender Haley Makuch (Granby, Conn.) had the initial shot off the corner, but it was blocked. Crusader junior midfielder Kaitlyn Murray (Farmington, Conn.) gathered the loose ball, but with a tough angle toward the goal from the left baseline, she saw her attempt slide left of the cage.
  • Lafayette added an insurance goal in the 70th minute (69:33), as on a breakaway, Rosie Shanks beat Matchett to make the score its final, 2-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Matchett posted six saves for the Crusaders, while Arnold was called upon to make one stop for the visitors. Murray also made a defensive save in the contest, stopping a would-be Lafayette goal in the 15th minute.
  • The Leopards held the advantage in total shots (16-3), shots on goal (9-1) and penalty corners (10-1).
  • The defensive save by Murray was her team-best second of the season.
