Men’s ice hockey takes Cross City Classic against Maine in overtime

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team defeated Maine, 3-2 in overtime, Saturday night at the DCU Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior Matt Kursonis got the Crusaders on the board just under nine minutes into the first period, picking a corner and depositing the puck over the shoulder of the Black Bear's netminder.
  • The two teams played nearly even in the second period, with Holy Cross holding the slight lead in shots, 12-11.
  • The score held at 1-0 until junior Noah Eyre picked up his first goal of the season on the power play with 6:55 to play in regulation.
  • Maine would not go quietly, however, as they tied the game with two four-on-four goals in a 1:06 span.
  • Senior Connor Welsh proved to be the hero in overtime, sending a screaming wrist shot over the shoulder of the netminder for the game-winning goal.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Sophomore Danick Leroux recorded 26 saves in his first win of the season.
  • The win marked the first over Maine since Feb. 4, 1978.
